How Active Directory Works: Users, Computers, and Domains

Day 2 – Post 2

What Is a Domain Controller and Why Is It Critical?

A Domain Controller (DC) is the server that runs Active Directory.
It handles:

  • user logins

  • password checks

  • access permissions

  • security policies

If Domain Controllers are unavailable, users may not be able to log in or access systems.
That’s why businesses often use multiple DCs for resilience and reliability.
