The Big Switch-Off: Traditional Phone Lines Are Disappearing — Is Your Business Ready?
The copper network is going away — and soon.
By December 2025, Openreach will switch off the UK’s traditional landline network (PSTN & ISDN). That means the analogue phone lines businesses have relied on for decades will stop working.
If your phone system still runs through these copper lines, it’s time to act now to avoid disruption.

What’s happening?
The UK’s Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) are being retired and replaced with digital, internet-based communication. Instead of relying on ageing copper infrastructure, future calls will run over broadband using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology.
This change affects:
-
Standard landline phones
-
ISDN business phone systems
-
Alarm and lift lines
-
Fax machines and older card payment terminals
When is it happening?
The switch-off process has already begun in some areas, and no new PSTN or ISDN services can be ordered since September 2023.
The final shutdown date is December 2025 — after that, the old phone lines will no longer function.
